“Look again at that dot. That’s here. That’s home. That’s us. On it everyone you love, everyone you know, everyone you ever heard of, every human being who ever was, lived out their lives. The aggregate of our joy and suffering, thousands of confident religions, ideologies, and economic doctrines, every […] saint and sinner in the history of our species lived there–on a mote of dust suspended in a sunbeam.”
Carl Sagan, Pale Blue Dot: A Vision of the Human Future in Space
One shouldn’t feel nihilistic after hearing such words. The sum of our existences reduced to a quote. Why do we love quotes so much? We are a quote based culture. Art makes no exception. What is our purpose as artists? To create art. What is Art (start rolling eyes)? Art is many, many things. For example it is a document. Of course not in the broad sense as it would have been intended several centuries ago. That function of documenting reality as it is perceived has been replaced by technology (billions of cameras dissect and record reality every day). Art will remain a document of our creativity, intelligence and emotions. That is what we do.
